Hurricane Sandy: The Aftermath...

Things have been a bit hectic around Lunatic Central these last few days because of Hurricane Sandy. We were without power here for nearly three days, but things are slowly returning to normal. Posting will be extremely light for a bit, as there's some cleanup and house repairs that need to be seen to, and I will have very little time for this sort of tomfoolery.

Even at that, we here at The Lunatic's Asylum were extremely fortunate; being up on higher ground, and protected from the worst of the wind by the hills around here, we still have a house. We weren't flooded out, and the loss of power and phone service for a few days was a minor inconvenience compared to what some others have suffered from this storm. We ask that you remember these folks in your prayers, and that you maybe open your wallets and make a donation to the Red Cross to help those who are currently homeless, injured, and hungry.

We realize things are tight for everyone these days and if you can't fork over $10 or $20, then some charities are accepting all sorts of other aid: old clothing, blankets, tools, food donations, anything that can be used to help a few folks fill a belly for a night, keep warm, or rebuild a home or neighborhood. If you can find something buried in a closet that someone might get some use out of, then please, find a way to get it to them. You can make most donations of this sort to your local Salvation Army, or at your local firehouse and police station; they'll make sure that someone who needs it, gets it.

Thanks, Nena! You'll be happy to know that while Staten Island is hip deep in water in some places, while lower Manhattan's Business District in under water, while power and phone service is disrupted, our Mayor, the execrable Michael Bloomberg, has decided that it's more important to take cops, fireman and ambulances off of disaster recovery efforts in order to re-station them along this Sunday's NYC Marathon Route, which also means that tunnels and bridges will be closed to vehicle traffic to allow complete assholes to run 26 miles in shorts full of their own shit in complete safety.

I'm almost thinking that Ray Nagin would be a better Mayor. At least he had the class to assume the fetal position and cry his ass off during Katrina, instead of polluting the airwaves with his stupidity.

Oh, and BTW, I'll be posting links for people to send some help our way, if they can. I'd also like to point out that the people of Breezy Point and the Rockaways are not only flooded out, but a fire that got out of control destroyed hundreds of houses because fire trucks could not cross the bridge to get out there and fight the fires. And that's an area where many firefighters actually LIVE, That neighborhood saw several hundred of it's inhabitants die on September 11th rushing to save others, and also suffered from a plane crash just a few days after 9/11.

No one in a position of authority in this city gives a shit about the outer boroughs, preferring to take are of their rich and high-falutin' friends in Manhattan, instead.
