One of the reasons why I haven't been around to spew my usual caustic bullshit (and why the caustic bullshit I did manage to spew was, in my opinion, of poor quality due to a lack of attention to detail) is that my mother has had a kneee replacement operation...finally.
I say "finally" because the operation was postponed once, having supposed to have been done Tuesday morning, but for the surgeon calling in sick. Well, in any case, it was finally done this morning, and having spent the better part of the last two weeks hanging around New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases, I've managed to make a number of interesting observations.
By the way, as I list these observations I wish to make one thing crystal clear; the people at NYU have been nothing short of brilliant professionals in all of their dealings with my mother and myself. The level of dedication displayed by the Staff --including the administrators, and right down to the security guards and facilities guys -- has been a wonder to behold. They have really gone above and beyond in a way that one would not expect, if one believed the horror stories told about our"Broken Health Care System" as told by by a communist in sheep's clothing...errr...democrat.
I can, with complete confidence, predict the following;
When ObamaCare is finally implemented this level of quality service, covered by insurance -- private or Medicare -- will simply cease to exist.
Anyways, my observations....
The first one is the absolutly amazing amount of paperwork that one must do at each stage of the process before treatment can even begin. The Legal System seems to have made a concerted effort to innundate the Medical System with a deluge of paper that would make an ardent environMENTAList cry at the thought of all those sacrificed trees. It isn't just the usual range of CYA liability waivers, either; living wills, power-of-attorneys, HIPA documents, scads of disclaimer forms, treatment options that must be individually approved (all with their own range of all the other paperwork), organ donor forms, insurance forms, compliance forms, various releases, Medicare forms, and stuff I never even knew existed. All of it in triplicate, naturally.
I remember someone once telling me that closing on a house entailed your having to write a few hundred signatures. That's Bush League; try all the signatures necessary just to have your own blood siphoned off and stored for the operation...just in case it's needed. That alone entailed a stack of documents a quarter-inch thick.
Now imagine what happens when your surgery is rescheduled, and the 14,000 sheets of paper sacrificed are now invalid because they're dated incorrectly...and they have to be filled in all over again. Even your medical chart consists of enough paper to choke a woodchipper running on nitrous, and there's already a PC next to your bed where the same information is being entered, it has to be put on paper, too (paper, after all, doesn't break or require electricity). Somehow, I get the feeling that most of this is not so much medical necessity as legal make-work. I mean, after you've done you job and chased the ambulance, you might as well stick around for what happens next, just in case you can make another shyster buck, right?
Do you really think that sort of tangled, impenetrable (to me, anyway) sort of bureacracy is going to somehow go the way of the brontosaur when President Odickhead has his Eyedrops-and-BandAid rationing system fully operational? I'll bet it fucking doubles, easily, because there will be another three layers of rubber-stamp bureaucrats to employ at taxpayer expense, and more lawyers. Somehow, the people who have to keep track of all this paper manage to do so in a way I find amazing; I've spent my life trying to get computers to do what these people do (so that they don't have to, and thus, can be made redundant...and unemployed), and I'm telling you there is just no way thatyou can easily automate that sort of system short of a major investment in IT and software engineers that might signify a crippling investment for most hospitals.
If you expect the government to design such an automated system, it would cost three times as much, rely on carbon paper, crayons and cave paintings, probably require at least three chickens killed in a voodoo beastiality ritual, and be engineered in Mumbai, and fail miserably to the point where it would actually kill people.
My next observation has to do with the difference between the quality of Staff at a Private Institution (like NYU) and a public one (like a hospital run by New York City). I've been in city run hospitals before (and I have to admit, the better ones; I've never been in a hospital that serves the Urban Aboriginies...errr...lower-income community, for example), and the difference is Night and Day.
The NURSES were able to answer my questions about specifics, like the medications my mother would be taking, her physical therapy requirements, and made an effort to update me on her condition after surgery approximately every 90 minutes. If the first nurse I was dealing with wasn't available, another one stepped right in seemlessly. They were knowlegable, they were dilligent, they gave a shit. Not like the union hacks at the City-run hospitals, and while I have to admit some of those came close to the NYU nursing staff, the number of those was very small, indeed.
My mother's anesthesiologist and orthopeadic surgeon (Doctor Zuckerman, the Chairman of the Department!) both spoke to us before and after the operation and layed out every stage of the proceedure from start to finish,and answered every question, no matter how stupid. In fact, Doc Zuckerman even cancelled his vacation to stick around this weekend, since he had had to reschedule her procedure earlier in the week, and he's already -- not 8 hours after surgery was completed -- answered a page from my sister to answer HER dumb questions, too. Cheerfully, no less.
I wonder how that will work when ObamaCare makes every nurse and doctor little better than a Teamster?
Another observation; surgeons apparently smoke. An awful lot. When they had some time between patients, you could find a small knot of them across the street from the hospital enjoying a quick cigarette. I guess it's one way they deal with the stress attendant with screwing with people's insides, and at least they're not in the local bars when they have the time. You'll also find the surgical staff out there having a ciggie as time permits, too. Not all, mind you, but a fair number.
Take THAT Mayor Bloomberg! If you had your way, cigarettes would be banned, and those doctors -- the best in New York City -- would be across the street in Stuyvesant Park scoring crack, wouldn't they?
Another thing that I found incredible was the clientele. We're talking people with all sorts of maladies from a torn ACL, degenerative arthritis to shattered spines...and all of them seem to come and go from the hospital with smiles on their faces. I have seen a woman in a wheelchair regularly over the last week, whose spine is deformed in such a way that she sits in that chair like a folded ruler. Her chin, literally, hovers above her feet. She was singing to herself this afternoon (on HER smoke break!) and told me how much better she's gotten since she started going to NYU for her treatments and therapy...rather than the crummy old Veteran's Administration hospital she used to go to (as I understand it, she was involved in a vehicular accident while on active duty).
I can't imagine what sort of care our troops are getting at the VA if a woman in that bad a condition can find it in herself to sing in the process of what I gather will be a very long ordeal of repeated surgeries and various therapies. It's the hospital, she tells me; they do things no one else can, and the people there care about their patients, and their reputations. Heck, within 3 hours of surgery this morning, they already had my mother up on her new replacement knee trying to walk. If she had been in a City hospital, they would probably leave her lying in bed until she was a mass of sores.
If ever there was an example of just how outrageously good our medical system is -- despite all the obstacles, the hassles, the stupid and petty regulations -- NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases is it. I would highly recommend it to anyone who has a bum hip, knee, genetic defect, disability or was the victim of a cruel accident. These last two weeks have been an education in dedication and skill.
This is the EXACTLY the reason why ObamaCare needs to be strangled in the cradle.

The Would-Be Christmas Tree Bomber...

We should just automatically assume that if your name is "Mohammed" that you are a terrorist who just hasn't gone"boom" yet. Really, what the fuck is it with these guys that they all seem to be named Mohammed, or worse, like this guy, have two Mohammeds in their name?
Note to Homeland Security: get the guys with two or more Mohammed's in their name first. They seem to be the worst of the lot...and the easiest to catch, because they're also apparently the dumbest of the lot.
And Somalis seem even less-well equipped to live in the West than other Muslims. Probably because they come from a place that's still stuck in the Mud Age. Maybe they just can't deal with the reality of a place where you don't wake up with a few dozen flies in your mouth, and spend the rest of your day fighting the ants for scraps of food.
Anyways, this kid was obviously set to do major damage, and the amazing thing is that the FBI was on to him for almost Day One, it seems. I'm not sure how they do that, but good job.
I wonder how many of these "naturalized", "home-grown" jihadis turn to radical Islam once in America after the blond chicks refuse to give 'em any? I'd be fascinated to know if the FBI is keeping stats on such a thing, since it appears, to me, that the main cause of "radicalization" is the inability of these assholes to get laid.

Conspiracies woven from whole cloth always answer all the questions swirling about liberal failures, and spare libtard the pain of having to ask the questions.
People hate ObamaCare? Must be because republicans talked badly about it.
Barack Obama is about as popular as tuberculosis? Must be the racism on Talk Radio.
Democrats lost the House of Representatives and damn-near lost the Senate? Must be because all those bitter clingers and Teabaggers fixed the election, suppressing minority voters and taking scads of foreign money to defeat good democrats who had only the best interests of the United States in their hearts.
There's apparently a secret hideout where all these conservatives, Tea Partiers, Godbots and Closet Klansmen get together, far from prying eyes, and plot the demise of the democratic republic. There, in smokey back rooms, the Chamber of Commerce, Tea Party, Republican Party (and probably the Knights Templar) all get together to plot and scheme, and then they unleash their dastardly super-secret plan to crush the poor and true-hearted.

Been Busy...Again...
It's been a hellacious week; a gluttonous holiday ("overindulged" would be a poor adjective to describe my Thanksgiving), some personal matters to attend to, a medical matter or two, and of course, last Saturday was movie day with my nephew Mark. I just haven't had the time to blog.

This isn't about peace and understanding, So-called "Moderate" Muslims; this is about your rabid co-religionists building a Victory Monument in Downtown Manhattan...one that will be even more glorious, and even more offensive, if they can get the Infidel to pay for his own embarrassment and humiliation.

Just the other day, Al'Qaeda, by whatever means they make these things known, announced that it was no longer interested in pulling off really big terrorist attacks, but will instead concentrate on inflicting a Death of a Thousand Cuts on America, and you know what? They're probably succeeding.
After all, think about it: what has happened since 9/11? Has there been a battlefield victory that hasn't been transitory, or compromised by politics?
What has our own government done to "protect" us from future terrorist acts? They've made it impossible to fly, for one thing; if you aren't delayed, harassed, and aggravated by the need to be at an airport four hours before your 2-hour flight, subjected to lengthy questioning by a federalized high-school dropout, have your luggage scanned or searched by federalized thieves, then you can look forward to no food on the flight, full body x-rays, intrusive (and illegal) pat-downs without probable cause, and soon to come, mandatory cavity searches.
We're harassing children, pregnant mothers, the elderly and infirm on airport "security" lines; we're making nursing mothers drink their own breast milk. We're subjecting old ladies in wheelchairs to physical searches. We're taking away cigarette lighters from smokers. We're even harassing pilots and flight crews, just so we don't offend Muslims! Heaven forbid we start patting down Middle-Eastern men and the walking carpets they call wives.
The government has made it more difficult and expensive for Americans to maintain and renew their required documents: passports, driver's licenses, Social Security Cards, State Identification cards, so that they aren't abused by terrorists-- but then demands that Americans produce these valid identification documents whenever they travel, apply for a job, or are confronted by law enforcement.
Unless you're Mexican...then we somehow shouldn't bother to ask you for these difficult-to-obtain-and-required-to-work documents in Arizona because that would be racist or something.
Illegal aliens, whether Mexican or Islamic, are being legally and institutionally protected by the government. The price for that? Your girlfriend gets felt up, and you have to take your shoes off every five feet at the airport.
Look around you: your civil rights have been steadily eroded under the guise of "security" (and yet, the government takes great pains to ensure that the "rights" of terrorists are scrupulously protected). Your freedom of movement has been seriously infringed upon by the need to undergo lengthy and degrading "security measures" which do little more than raise the cost of taking a commercial flight. None of it has found a single terrorist, or prevented a single attempted attack.
The Underwear Bomber was on a No Fly list. His own father had turned him in to the authorities, and he still almost managed to bring a plane down over Detroit. It was his fellow passengers (all of them, apparently security-screened much better than he), and his own incompetence that "caught" him. What is the government doing with all this data it collects, all this "intelligence" it spends enormous resources to acquire, if it can't keep a guy -- whose address they have beforehand -- off a plane? A few weeks ago, terrorists tried to blow up cargo aircraft using crude bombs hidden in printer cartridges; in a another few weeks, there will be an entire new regime of"security" procedures for you to follow when sending a Fed-Ex package that will cost you more money, cause you more aggravation, and inconvenience the hell out of you.
I hate to say it, but Al'Qaeda probably is winning. Worse, they're winning without having to do very much; our own government-- and our own stupidity -- has helped them destroy our rights and freedoms, bit-by-bit. Every threat or minor action brings an overwhelming (and usually misdirected, or completely stupid) response from the government that has long-lasting and deleterious effects upon our citizens. If you're a democrat, you love these things because they simply get people used, by degrees, to living in a Police State that you all secretly cream for,and if you're a republican, you love this shit because one of your cronies is probably scooping up a federal contract somewhere, but if you're the average citizen, your world is shrinking along with your rights. And you're paying for the privilege of being deprived of them.
What's left of Al'Qaeda is probably sitting in a cave laughing their asses off. Why fight the Infidel when you can let him fight and destroy himself, right?
Oh, and make sure you get a government grant, while you're at it.
It's about time we started taking this War seriously, in the sense that it's less about the Airport "Security" Kabuki, and the "Hearts-and-Minds-With-Guns" campaign overseas. John Fitzgerald Kennedy is Still Critically Dead...
Yesterday was the anniversary of the assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, President of the United States.
I hate all things Kennedy, so you won't get any tears here.
I was struck by the total lack of the usual over-the-top,The-Man-Was-A-God, handwringing, overwrought, tearjerking television extolling the invented virtues and fabricated hagiography of a thoroughly despicable man this year. Typically, the anniversary of this event brings out the very worst in the Libtard-Baby-Boomer media who simply can't help themselves but to sing the praises of their hollow childhood hero, so "tragically" murdered on a street in Dallas.
The "Tragedy" is that John Kennedy had such a large extended family --which would one day infest the American body politic for two generations -- to take advantage of his death so as to steal lucrative jobs they otherwise would never get, as having really big teeth and being the child of an alcoholic are not usually qualifications for a job outside of politics.
I mean, not one documentary. Not one showing of the now-famous Oliver Stone tour-de-bullshit. No interviews with people who were "close" to Kennedy, but who haven't done a damned thing since. No replays of the Zapgruder film. No wall-to-wall conspiracy theorists. Even the History Channel didn't make much of a fuss (and JFK is one of the staples of History Channel programming. JFK and World War Two...guess Ice Road Truckers rates higher than JFK, huh?).
It's been curiously refreshing, from my point of view. I long ago tired of the fake grief, the overdone hero worship, and of course, hearing the stories about "where I was when Kennedy was shot...".
Who gives a shit? He was, in hindsight, one of the worst American Presidents of the 20th Century. After all, look who he picked to succeed him; Lyndon Johnson would be the worst thing to happen to America until the arrival of James Earl Carter made him look like a modern-day Pericles. I would have thought that the advent of Barack Obama would have brought out the sickly-disgusting streak of nostalgia for shallow non-achievers (like JFK) present in the fibre of every Baby Boomer, considering how he makes JFK, LBJ, and Carter combined seem Churchillian by comparison, but I guess they're keeping quiet these days, what with having ruined the economy, academia, the Government, and still hoping to keep the illegal Free Viagra for Seniors program hidden deep inside ObamaCare.
So, no paens to the dead king from the Haight-Ashbury set this year, I guess. The generation behind me probably doesn't even know who JFK was, and if they are aware of him, they probably think he was...like... President during...like... the Civil War...like... the one we like fought against the Germans or Vietnamese, or ...like...whatever, in 1776...to keep...like...black people...like...slaves.
The silence reinforces something I've often thought about; that within 50 years or so, all events are eventually forgotten by the greater mass of people. The lack of the usual television Day of National Mourning this year was perhaps the first sign that the manufactured grief (and history)over that assassination of a mediocre personality whose father bought him the White House is finally becoming a thing of the past.
And that's a good thing.
